This site is an educational publication. It does not take loan applications, so it does not collect the information a loan application would require.

TwoWhat we collect

Nothing, if you only read. Browsing the entries requires no account and we ask for no information to show them to you.
Contact form submissions. If you write to us, we record the name, email address, subject and message you provide, with a timestamp and the network address the request came from.
Member desk accounts. If you create an account, we store your name, email address and a cryptographic hash of your password. We never store the password itself and cannot recover it.
Server logs. Ordinary web server logs record requested URLs, timestamps, network addresses, referrers and user agents.

We do not collect Social Security numbers, income, account numbers, or credit information, because nothing on this site needs them. If anyone asks you for those on a page that appears to be this site, it is not this site.

ThreeWhy we collect it

To answer your correspondence, to operate and secure the member desk, to keep the site running and defend it against abuse, and to understand in aggregate which entries are read so we know what to write next. We do not build advertising profiles of readers and we do not sell personal information.

We share personal information only with service providers who host or operate the site on our behalf and are bound to use it only for that purpose, and where required by law or legal process, or to protect our rights or the safety of others. If the publication is ever sold or merged, information may transfer as part of that transaction and this policy will continue to apply to it until it is replaced by a notice to you.

FiveCookies

The site uses a session cookie when you sign in to the member desk. That cookie holds an opaque session identifier, nothing else, and it expires when your session ends. Web fonts are requested from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts that service when a page loads. We do not set advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. If we adopt analytics that set cookies, this section will say so before they run.

SixRetention

Contact messages are kept while they are useful for correspondence and record-keeping, then deleted. Account records are kept until you ask us to delete the account. Server logs are kept for a short operational period and then rotated away.

SevenYour rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, and to complain to a supervisory authority. To exercise any of them, write to [email protected] from the address on the account and describe what you want. We do not discriminate against anyone for exercising a privacy right.

EightChildren

This site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information, contact us and it will be deleted.

NineSecurity

Passwords are stored only as hashes produced by a modern one-way algorithm. Access to stored correspondence is limited to people who need it. No system is perfectly secure, and we do not claim otherwise; we hold as little as possible so that there is as little as possible to lose.

TenChanges

If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be posted here with a revised date. Continued use of the site after that constitutes acceptance of the change.
